As we get older, stepping out of our comfort zone isn’t easy, especially when it comes to exercise.
Even with my medical background, it wasn’t enough to push me to start working out. I knew I had to begin somewhere, but the motivation just wasn’t there. My hubby had been encouraging me to work out for a while, but I could always come up with a hundred excuses not to.
The day finally came, not because I was overweight or anything, but my health wasn’t in its best shape. When I eventually gave it a go, my motivation still wasn’t at its peak.
My Fitness Journey
I’m not a fan of the gym, so I started with something I liked—kickboxing. I was going three times a week, but when the place closed down, I stopped exercising again. After some time, I decided to try F45. I aimed for four times a week, but just as I was getting into the groove, I came down with dengue. After resting for a few months, I returned, only to find out I needed surgery on my spine. It wasn’t related to F45 but was due to long-standing sciatica issues. My L4/L5 was cracked, requiring a minor surgery. By then, my F45 package expired, and my doctor advised against HIIT or any strenuous activities.
My hubby used this chance to convince me to try the gym. So, I gave in. 😂
After a few months of gym workouts in Anytime Fitness, I decided to treat myself to a BA and liposuction for my 40th birthday. That meant another three-month break before I could return to the gym.
It seemed like I could never stick to six months of gym without some kind of drama. After my BA last year, I finally managed to stay consistent for over a year, going five times a week. 😂 While I’m still not crazy about the gym or exercise, it’s become a habit.I’m also planning to start Pilates soon to strengthen my core, as recommended by my physiotherapist post-surgery.
Starting isn’t easy, but once you begin, start small and build your way up. It takes time, but this lifestyle won’t harm your body in the long run. I don’t believe in starving or unhealthy diets. Choosing the right food and staying active is still the best way forward.
Since my goal was never about weight, I don’t have a ‘before’ picture to show. Just a photo of me working out, feeling proud of how far I’ve come.
