I’m happy to have Jasmine Kang to be our featured Mumpreneur for July 2019! She is a mother of 2 lovely kids and she is ready to share her motivation and challenges with us in running both her business, creating a new formula and juggling the kids.
If you are looking for inspiration and motivation, then our featured business mum ~ Jasmine, shows you what’s possible.

Tell me about your child(ren) and your partner
I have two children, a 5+ year old boy and a 10 month old girl. Having gone through 5 pregnancies, I feel really blessed to have them in my life. My hubby is pretty hands-on and engages the kids whenever he’s around. He’s overseas most of the time, thus I’m the main caregiver to both.

What did you do previously before starting up your own business?
I was working in the pharmaceutical industry for a few years before I embarked full-time on a business. After 1.5 years and losing all my savings, I closed this business and went back to the pharmaceutical industry.

Tell us about your business and how did you start?
Skinlycious is a one-stop skin care solution for people with acne, acne-prone and oily skin. I started Skinlycious in 2013 when my hubby was posted overseas for work. I quit my job then and followed him overseas.

What motivated you to become a mumpreneur?
Having struggled with acne for 14 long years, Skinlycious was born out of the need to solve my own acne woes. It’s been 6 years since and Skinlycious has given me immense satisfaction helping others solve their acne woes.

How does your partner support you on this journey?

He listens to my problems and offer suggestions.

What is your biggest challenge in the business and how you overcome it?
Being only trained in biomedical science, and having no experience in managing a business, especially on branding and marketing, it was very difficult in the beginning. Learning and acquiring new skills has never stopped since.

What do you do to prevent burnout/stress?
I was so burnout previously that I fell asleep while driving. I got into a minor accident but luckily nobody was hurt. Ever since, I pace myself and avoid giving myself too tight deadlines. I always remind myself that my main priority is my family as my kids are still young. I would like to be present to witness their growing milestones.

What is your proudest moment? Both business and family.
In business, being able to help many customers clear their acne. Being a small brand with a small marketing budget, we usually get the worst cases, where these customers have tried many other products/doctors, before they come to us and try us as their last resort. It feels great being able to help them solve their long-standing acne issues.

In family, being able to watch my kid’s every milestone while running a profitable business.

What advice would you give to give to a new mumpreneur or someone else who want to work in this area?

Find your niche and know your target audience. Took me two years to figure that out.

What is your favorite quote?
“Insanity : doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results ” Albert Einstein

What is your favorite book?
Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. It was my first self-improvement book and it changed my perspective of just studying hard and climbing the corporate ladder.

Lastly, travel or food?
Both

On Siblings Rivalry and 6 Personal Solutions.

I would say siblings rivalry is the most challenging aspect. Even when I try not to take sides, one party will feel it’s unfair. This really requires a lot of patience and explanation of everyone’s point of view.
