This post will be focusing on our day 3 and 4, Kid-friendly itinerary in Kuala Lumpur.

Continuing with our 5D4N trip from Singapore to Penang and Kuala Lumpur! If you haven’t already, be sure to check out my previous post, where I shared the details of our first two days of adventure. From exploring Penang kids-friendly attractions to indulging in local cuisine!

Day 3: Heading to Kuala Lumpur From Penang

On the 3rd day of our trip, we set off from Penang to Kuala Lumpur. I felt a little sad because I don’t think we explored enough, but with the tight schedule (since the September school holiday is only 1 week), I hope we can return to Penang one day to fully experience and learn more about this little island.

We had breakfast at the hotel, and before we left, the kids went for a swim while some of the adults headed to the gym. We set off at 10:30 AM and reached our lunch spot around 12:30 PM.

Lunch at Heritage Town Cafe Gopeng

Heritage Town Cafe Gopeng
Well designed and cosy cafe – Heritage Town Cafe Gopeng

This is a great spot for a lunch or rest break if you’re traveling from Penang to Kuala Lumpur. They offer a wide variety of cuisines, including local Malaysian dishes, Western food, and Thai cuisine. Overall, the food is decent—nothing spectacular, but tasty enough. The coffee here isn’t too bad either.

After our lunch, we went to the cafe opposite – High Street Kopitiam, to explore. They sell food similar to Heritage Town Cafe, but with slightly fewer options. According to Google reviews, they are popular for their Nonya kueh, but when we were there, not many kueh were left. However, I can’t deny that this place is great for photo taking!

The interior design makes me feel like I’ve stepped back in time.

Checking in Our Airbnb

After lunch, we drove for another 2 hours and reached our Airbnb in Petaling Jaya. We chose this location because it’s quite near One Utama Mall, where we plan to spend time tomorrow. Since there are 13 of us and we’ll be spending most of our time outside, we decided to go with an Airbnb for our stay in Kuala Lumpur. We paid about SGD 560 for 3 days and 2 nights.

Overall, the house is really big but has a very old-school structure. When I checked, they told me that we could park 2 MPVs, but the front porch can only accommodate 1 MPV. So, please take this into consideration if both you and your friend drive MPVs.

You can see that the owner has made an effort to revamp and design the place as modern as possible. This place is not too bad if you just want a place to sleep, which is the case for us.

The wifi is good, there is Netflix, but you need to log in into your own account.

Dinner and Activity at Utama Farm

After we settled down, we headed to Utama Farm for dinner and activities for the kids. Utama Farm is about a 10-minute drive from our Airbnb.

Utama farm in kuala lumpur
Utama Farm entrance

Utama is a place where you can enjoy meals (a farm-to-table dining experience), as well as prawning, a petting zoo, and fishing activities, among others.

You can buy individual activities from Klook, or if you’re going in a group like us with many kids, you can opt for their birthday party package. Below is the birthday package we chose, but please note that this may change.

Birthday Package min. 10pax, RM$100 /child
– Prawning
– Baseball
– Petting zoo & animal feeding
– Fish scooping game
– Seed germination & seeding
– Veggie harvesting
– Farm-to-table meal (as below)

We started off with the petting zoo and animal feeding, which is the kids’ favorite! The birthday package doesn’t include adult entry, so we paid RM15 per adult. The petting zoo isn’t very big, but it has quite a lot of farm animals and reptiles.

Utama Farm petting zoo and fishing area.

Even though it’s a small petting zoo, we spent more than an hour feeding and holding the reptiles and animals. There’s only one staff member managing the zoo, so you’ll need to be patient if you require help with interacting or holding the animals. The package doesn’t include goat feeding, so if you want to add in is additional RM5 for half a bottle and RM10 for full bottle.

After the petting zoo, we decided to have dinner first. The package meal comes with mixed vegetables, fried rice, and dumplings. I can’t remember if the chicken wings were included. Anyway, the portions are huge, especially the fried rice.

They have a wide variety of food options, like steamboat and à la carte dishes, but for us adults, we chose a set meal that’s good for 4-6 people, priced at RM268. All the prices I’ve mentioned so far don’t include tax.

The set meal comes with half roasted duck, Crispy butter prawns, While Tilapia, creamy butter chicken and kam heong chicken. Every dish is not bad, except for the roasted duck which it’s not cooked like our Chinese style and a little dry.

Our RM268 set meal for 4-6 pax.

The kids finished their dinner a bit earlier than we did, so the farm manager organized a small harvesting and seeding competition for them, as we weren’t allowed to take any harvest home.

After the harvesting game, the kids proceeded to go prawning, which they had been looking forward to! The prawning activity really testing their patience and our skills.

Even though prawning was a new experience for the kids, the waiting time and occasional disappointment didn’t make the older ones give up. Surprisingly, they kept prawning until time was up. The owner was kind enough to add more prawns, and we paid RM30 to have them steamed so we could all enjoy the fruits of our labor.

The steam prawns is really good.

After prawning, we thought the kids would be drained, but they were still enthusiastic about trying the baseball batting cage. Initially, we thought the kids would be playing among themselves and were worried about safety, but it turned out to be one-on-one with a machine. Plus, there was a staff member inside the cage guiding them on how to hit the ball.

DAY 4 – Kid-Friendly Itinerary In Kuala Lumpur

Our Kuala Lumpur activities were more relaxed and mainly indoors, but we still woke up early for breakfast at Ipoh Noodle 17i, which was just a 2-minute drive from our Airbnb. It’s a very old-school Chinese restaurant, popular for their Ipoh noodles and kampong chicken.

What we ordered! Kampong chicken Ipoh noodles and bean sprouts.

Their kampong chicken is really smooth and tender. The Ipoh chicken soup is delicious, and the noodles have a smooth, springy texture. They handmake their fish balls, so the texture is quite good.

It seems to be quite popular among the locals, but finding parking is an issue. I would suggest avoiding it during peak periods. It’s not a super must try place, but good to try if you are nearby and a fan of Ipoh Chicken noodle soup.

After breakfast, since we were early, we headed to the nearby morning market—Pasar Sentosa in Petaling Jaya—to experience the local vibes and culture.

Overall view of Pasar Sentosa @PJ.

In the morning, it’s a wet market, but from late afternoon onwards, this marketplace becomes a food paradise. Although we didn’t have the opportunity to experience the night food market, I highly recommend going to soak in the local culture and vibes!

The pasar is actually not very big—you can see the end of the market at a glance—but it’s well-equipped with a wide variety of stalls, from fresh goods and cooked food to dried goods, clothes, household products, and bedding supplies. At the end of the market, you’ll find the non-halal section, which mainly sells pork.

Activities at One Utama Shopping Centre

Since we had a lot of outdoor activities for our trip, our day 4 activities will be mainly indoor at 1 Utama Shopping Centre. It’s one of the largest shopping malls in Malaysia, to give you some idea, it’s about 3.7 times bigger of Vivocity.

There are a lot of kid-friendly activities to do in 1 Utama, but we only had time for two, plus lunch. I would say if you have a few days to spare in KL, don’t want to head outdoors, and prefer staying in a hotel instead of an Airbnb, you can consider One World Hotel, which is linked to the shopping mall.

Personally, I haven’t stayed there before, but based on my research, it’s quite kid-friendly, and their breakfast is highly praised. I hope I get the opportunity to stay there on my next trip to KL.

Windlab Kuala Lumpur

Our first stop was Windlab, but we didn’t realize we needed to book a time slot in advance. Luckily, there was an available slot at 11:30 a.m. After completing the payment and registration, we went downstairs to choose our lunch, but the kids wanted Hai Di Lao, so we made a reservation to go after our Windlab session.

Windlab has a few pricing tiers, which I’ve posted below. Initially, our plan was to check the price on the spot and compare it with Klook, but buying tickets from Klook requires booking three days in advance. With the pricing below, you can decide which platform offers the better deal. You can also use my Klook discount code “QiqiKlook” for a 5-10% discount.

Sorry for the reflection!

Since we had seven kids and all were first-timers, we got the small group package and added two more people, so it came to about SGD$14 per ride. We didn’t go for the kids’ party package because, in case any of the children didn’t want to participate, an adult could take over the flying experience. The entire session, including the briefing, took about an hour.

5D4N Road Trip Part 2, Kid-friendly Itinerary in Kuala Lumpur 38
The kids having briefing session before they change to their outfit.

The changing session took a bit of time because the staff had to help the kids with their earpieces, check their shoe sizes, and we adults were busy helping them get dressed and changed. Only sports shoes with shoelaces are allowed—no Crocs, no Velcro, and no other types of shoes. Otherwise, there’s an additional charge of RM10 for shoe rental.

All ready for action. I think the younger two doesn’t know what’s in for them even though they have watched the video, and I keep asking if they are sure.

Lunch at Hai Di Lao

Hai Di Lao should be a very familiar F&B for everyone, including the kids. Just sharing some tips if you are planning to have a meal over there.

Hai Di Lao should be familiar to everyone, including the kids. Here are some tips if you’re planning to have a meal there:

Tips:

  1. Make a reservation in advance before your activity and stick to your booked time.
  2. Once you arrive for your meal, let the staff know you’d like to book a manicure session.
  3. Check with the staff about available activities or promotions. For example, on the day we went, there was a minimum spending promo with a Chinese fan-making session. However, you can only participate in the activity after making your payment, and it’s on a first-come, first-served basis. We were lucky to get the last two fans, so one family made one fan each.

NextGen Kuala Lumpur

After lunch, our next activity was at NextGen, an indoor theme park. It’s a massive park with five zones, suitable for all ages—from toddlers to adults. One great thing about the theme park is that you get unlimited entry and playtime, whether it’s a weekday or weekend ticket. Just make sure your wrist tag is on, and you can easily check in and out.

We bought the tickets on the spot, but you can check the pricing or purchase them directly from their website. And make sure to bring a pair of grip socks; otherwise, you’ll need to buy one before going in.

Toddler section.

Each station has a staff member to oversee the area and prevent misuse or dangerous actions, but dropping kids is still not allowed. And do monitor your own child(ren).

Tip: If you or your kids are into Nintendo games, make sure to head over to the game room early to book your playtime slot.

Dinner at Sek Yuen Restaurant

We left for dinner at Sek Yuen Restaurant around 5:45 PM. This place has been around for approximately 76 years, and I’m drawn to its nostalgic vibes. It’s incredible to think of a restaurant able to survive for so long, especially with so many positive reviews online. Plus, it’s only about an 8-minute drive from Petaling Street Market, our next stop.

5D4N Road Trip Part 2, Kid-friendly Itinerary in Kuala Lumpur 51
They have 2 buildings, side by side. This is one of the building.

I made the reservation via WhatsApp, which I highly recommend since they tend to be fully booked during peak hours. The restaurant has a really old-school charm, and they even have a large table that fit all 13 of us, which is quite rare. Parking in the area can be a bit tricky—we circled around twice but couldn’t find a spot. Luckily, just as my hubby decided to drop us off, a parking slot opened up right next to the restaurant.

They’re highly praised for their pipa duck and eight treasure duck, but we didn’t order those since they require preordering in advance. Below are the dishes we ordered, I highly recommend the mayo prawns, salted egg bittergourd, sweet and sour pork, tomato egg and crispy pan cake and steamed chicken with golden needle mushroom and black fungus. The steam chicken is a little salty, maybe should eat with rice or you can advise them to reduce salt.

Petaling Street Market

After dinner, we headed straight to Petaling Street Market, which was about an 8-minute drive away. The street was very busy, and it took us a while to find parking. Eventually, we parked across from Old China Cafe at a paid open-air parking lot. From there, it was about a 3-minute walk to Petaling Street Market.

While walking towards the night market, we walked passed a lot of cafes and pubs, which is definitely worth checking out if you are not bringing young kids along.

Walking through Petaling Street Market feels like navigating a crossroads. Once we reached one side of the market, we saw plenty of stalls selling clothes, accessories, and shoes—mostly counterfeit items. Moving along, we entered another lane filled with street food stalls and restaurants.

We are actually feeling very full from our dinner, hence we didn’t really try much of the street food here.

So many street food, but the kids choose to eat tang hu lu.

After that, we passed by a restaurant offering authentic Lanzhou Chinese-Muslim cuisine. I have to say, my hubby and the kids were especially captivated by the guy rolling dough and preparing the meat.

The beef roll is really good. It’s somewhat like a spring onion pancake, but not exactly, and it’s packed with meat. It can definitely be a very filling meal on its own.

Kwai Chai Hong 鬼仔巷

While walking back to the carpark, the kids were drawn to a street lined with hanging lanterns. We decided to walked in and realized it’s actually one of the most Instagrammable spots in KL – Kwai Chai Hong. I’d definitely recommend visiting during the day if you’re into taking photos or want to enjoy the murals. If not, nighttime is better for soaking in the atmosphere and exploring the pubs and cafes tucked away in the alley.
